Value and impact of the Right Decision Service: 10 minute survey
Your input and views are very important at this time in providing us with feedback on the value and impact of the RDS. We would very much appreciate if you could please:
Your input will provide important evidence for the business case to Scottish Government for long term delivery of the Right Decision Service. Currently the RDS is funded as a key objective within the Digital Health and Care Delivery Plan and Data Strategy for Health and Care to achieve national scale-up by March 2025. Healthcare improvement Scotland will be presenting the business case for delivery of the RDS from April 2025 onwards to Scottish Government by the end of September 2024.

Redesign and improvements to RDS
Redesign of the Right Decision Service homepage, browse and search capabilities is progressing. Current work is focusing on enabling quicker access to favourite toolkits and to toolkits belonging to individual health boards or other organisations. The search capability is also being reconfigured, including making it easier to search for toolkits as well as for pages of content.
Other developments in progress include:
- More robust archiving and version control.
- Deep linking to individual mobile app toolkits. This will enable users to download a toolkit directly without having to navigate through the RDS mobile app.
- Introducing capability for SMS messaging from RDS apps.
New toolkits
A few examples of toolkits published to live in the last month include:
Toolkits in development
Some of the toolkits the RDS team are currently working on:
- Optimising glycaemic control in people with type 1 diabetes (SIGN 170) toolkit – publication imminent
- North of Scotland trauma guidelines
- Child sexual abuse and assault (NHS Tayside)
- NHS Borders patient information leaflets
These toolkits are not yet published on the RDS and are currently password-protected while they undergo testing. Please contact his.decisionsuppory@nhs.scot if you would like to learn more about a toolkit. The RDS team will put you in touch with the relevant toolkit lead.
Antimicrobial calculators
We are on-track to deliver the upgraded, UK CA marked gentamicin and vancomycin calculators at the same time as completing migration of local antimicrobial prescribing guidelines from the old standalone app to the new RDS platform by 3rd April 2024.
Learning opportunities
The RDS Learning Opportunities Working Group is developing a “Train the trainer” suite of resources for existing and new RDS editors. This will cover the full development process, from project initiation through to implementation and ongoing maintenance.
Editor webinars:
We are also holding webinars for existing and potential new editors on the following dates:
- Wednesday 10 April 3.30-4.30 pm
- Thursday 18 April 12-1 pm
These webinars will be an opportunity for:
- Potential new editors to learn more about RDS tools
- Previously trained editors to refresh their knowledge and skills and to ask questions
To book for one of these webinars, please complete the registration form at https://forms.office.com/e/eGjKqNVjeF
Quality audit
Ann is following up with all respondents to the quality audit questionnaire to address gaps and areas of clarification. All respondents are then asked to create an “About this toolkit” section providing summaries of their responses.
Usage statistics
Please be aware that it is not advised to directly compare toolkit-level statistics in the old standalone apps and in the RDS. The two platforms have very different structures making direct comparisons problematic. As one example, you are likely to have more false positives for the old setup (accidental openings etc) than you would for the new one.
Implementation projects
- Pilot projects based on Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology are in hand for the Manage Meds app for patients and carers and for the new Realistic Medicine app for citizens – Being a partner in my care: Realistic Medicine together.
- A slideset, video-recording and electronic flyer are available to support promotion and implementation of the new Realistic Medicine app for citizens. An electronic flyer is available for the Manage Meds app. Please contact his.decisionsupport@nhs.scot if you would like a copy of these materials.
- A before-after study is in planning stages for implementation of the new Prevent Diabetes app in the Moray area in NHS Grampian. The plan is to deliver this project between April and June 2024.
These projects will build our understanding of approaches that support effective implementation of digital apps for shared decision-making and self-management.
